EVERYTHING YOU'VE BEEN TOLD ABOUT MEDICAL WASTE DISPOSAL IS NOT TRUTH.small-machines

For years, this has been business as usual: Medical waste is generated at a healthcare facility and is packaged into reusable storage bins. Then these bins pile up in one or more rooms until picked up by a waste hauler — sometimes days later — for offsite treatment and disposal. It's then burned or treated with high-energy/carbon generating processes. Costly, risky, and burdened by long term recordkeeping requirements by the waste generator.

Today, the process can be very different for you: Clinical and medical waste no longer need be packaged and stored onsite. Your waste can now be treated right at your facility, using our on-site, eco-friendly and fast, SteriMed Systems. In just a 15 minute cycle, the SteriMed System transforms your regulated waste into ordinary trash. As a result, you can reduce your reliance upon waste hauling contracts, improve your facility's environmental footprint, and reduce your monthly costs for medical waste treatement by as much as 50%. Inexpensive. Safe. Smart.

Speaking of smart, the SteriMed System automatically catalogues and tracks all waste treated onsite. No more record keeping and manifesting of your waste treatment contracts! Additionally, the SteriMed is remotely monitored for required maintenance, and troubleshooting via our SteriMed eLink service.

So who and what is SteriMed Medical Waste Solutions?

The units — comparable in size to a photocopier — simultaneously shred, grind, mix and disinfect the waste with the proprietary Ster-Cid® solution. After the treatment of medical waste, the resulting material may be discarded as conventional trash, in accordance with solid waste requirements.

Each system features an intuitive user interface with message display to communicate to the operator the status of the automatic disinfection and destruction process. The system is placed into automatic cycle by the simple press of the “start” push button. The time for clinical personnel to load and start an automatic cycle is less than 1-minute per cycle.product-in-action

Ster-Cid® is a uniquely eco-friendly, biodegradable disinfectant solution which has been approved for use in the SteriMed Systems. Ster-Cid® is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“U.S. EPA”) in accordance with the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, Rodenticide Act (“FIFRA”) for use in the treatment of medical waste. During the SteriMed disinfecting cycle, the concentration of   Ster-Cid® is approximately 0.5 percent of the total volume of liquids. The  disinfectant Ster-Cid®, in conjunction with the SteriMed Systems, has been tested in independent laboratories. Results show that disinfection levels specified in the U.S. EPA guidance document, “Report on State and Territorial Association on Alternate Treatment Technologies” (STAATT), are met. The discharge of SteriMed  effluent (with a low concentration of the disinfectant) into the sewer system is accepted by wastewater treatment authorities. STAATT is a worldwide organization involved in setting criteria for efficacy of alternative treatment of medical waste technologies.

TAKE A GIANT LEAP FORWARD - ELIMINATE HAIs

It's true. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Toxic waste disposal removes infectious waste streams from the healthcare setting. The result? The risk of healthcare-acquired infections can be virtually eliminated.

trash-bags

With SteriMed, toxic waste is disposed of onsite — and disposed of daily. Without storage of biohazardous material, there's no accumulation of environmental contaminates within the facility.

Waste from each patient is placed into the waste receiver that disinfects and destroys the waste within 15-20 minutes of its generation. This same-hour toxic waste disposal environment boosts the level of staff comfort concerning the medical waste storage room and overall infection control effectiveness. The result is a far healthier healthcare setting.

HOW HEALTHCARE IMPACTS THE ENVIRONMENT

A healthcare facility makes significant contributions to their communities by providing a wide variety of services. They are also major employers, with healthcare comprising of at least 16% of the national and regional economy in most countries. Healthcare facilities operate all day everyday, making their environmental footprint large in many communities.

For example, hospitals alone in the US impact the environment by:

  • Generating approximately 7,000 tons per day of waste, including infectious waste, hazardous waste, and solid waste.
  • Using mercury in medical devices, equipment, light bulbs, etc.
  • Using materials that may have toxic effects: PVC, DEHP, cleaning materials, heavy metals in pesticides.
  • Consuming large amounts of energy in buildings and car fleets, and generating significant greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Consuming large amount of fossil fuels for fleets for trucks that transport consumables and waste to and from the facility.
  • Consuming large amounts of fresh water for domestic use and heating/cooling as well as landscaping.

There is also evidence that the health sector's energy use, prolific consumption of fresh water, large volume of waste produced, and resulting toxic emissions from its operations and reliance upon non-biodegradable chemicals undermine the health of the very communities the sector is meant to serve.

THINK GREEN

tree

Often the first steps in reducing the environmental footprint of a healthcare facility includes:

  • proper waste management, including on-site waste treatment
  • reduced red-bag (medical) waste volumes
  • increased recycling
  • purchase of energy star products
  • Use of eco-friendly disinfectants
  • Reduced transportation by in-sourcing of service like waste treatment.

Reducing a healthcare facility's environmental impact is always not an easy project. However, simultaneous and immediate impact on a facility's solid waste, landfill, fresh water, eco-toxity, and carbon footprints; all together, can be dramatically reduced today using innovative green technologies like SteriMed.

At SteriMed Medical Waste Solutions, we've always believed that the business of healthcare can and should have a positive impact not only the patients that it treats, but also on the communities they serve; and in doing so we were driven to develop the most cost effective, environmental aware technology for the onsite treatment of medical waste.

THE ECO-FRIENDLY COMPETITIVENESS OF STERIMED PRODUCTS

Traditional hazardous waste recycling haulers, well, haul—by the truckload. They pick up at your facility and transport the material to the treatment plant where they use either incineration or high heat processes like steam to treat your waste. Often times these treatment plants are located hundreds of miles away from your clinic. They then move the treated waste from the treatment plant to a community landfill site. This complete process from waste generation at your facility, to the remotely located treatment plant, to your waste's eventual resting place in a community landfill consumes lots of fossil fuels. All of which puts tons of greenhouse gasses like CO2 into the atmosphere and throwing the earth's natural carbon cycle way out of balance.

With SteriMed, your facility's waste is treated on-site and does not consume a drop of fossil fuel for offsite treatment transportation. As a result, greenhouse gasses are reduced to virtually zero. The SteriMed process dramatically reduces your facility's carbon, water, and landfill footprints.

Our on-site waste systems use less than 10 cents in electricity and cold-water resources per cycle. With our unique biodegradable disinfectant, SteriCid,tm medical waste is converted into ordinary trash , using an easy-to-use, environmentally friendly process Even more remarkable, the resulting solid waste take up 90 percent less space in the community landfill. At the end of the SteriMed treatment process is waste that can be placed into your facility's regular trash.

And with the average cost of treating waste on-site using SteriMed being less than 50% of most medical waste hauling contracts, you can begin today to realize that compared to SteriMed, everything else is a waste.
